Use Aromatherapy To Relieve Stress

What Is Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of fragrant oils extracted from plants in the treatment or prevention of disease and help in the reduction of stress, often called essential oils. The term essential indicates that the oil carries distinctive scent (essence) of the plant, not that it is an especially important or fundamental source.

Since essential oils are so potent, many can irritate the skin unless diluted with carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or olive oil. Essential oils are extracted by distillation but can also be extracted by expression or solvent extraction.

How To Use

Essential oils can be used through the skin (massage, shower, adding to bath water), and inhalation (ceramic burner, vaporizer, handkerchief, pillow).

Inhalation. Add a few drops into a ceramic burner with a lit candle underneath. When the oil warms up the scent will be dispersed into the air.

Vaporizer. Add a few drops to boiling water and inhale the vapours.

Skin Application. Add several drops to almond or olive oil, pour into your bath water, climb in and relax. You can also buy ready made oils for baths from some pharmacies. If you shower, mix up half the quantity and use on your shower sponge, flannel or body scrub.

Infusion. Some herbs and essential oils can be used as an infusion in a tea but always check before use.

Which to use

Firstly, you need to identify which essential oils are best for treating stress and meeting your needs. Lavender, clary sage, chamomile and lemon are a few of the common ones.

Lavender is a relaxant:-

add a few drops to warm bath water, climb in and relax.

add a few drops to water and put into a spray bottle. Spray around your home when you feel stressful.

Clary Sage* gives a feeling of being uplifted:-

add to a vaporizer to help you relax;

add a few drops to a carrier oil and get someone to massage you to help you relax.

Caution:- Expectant mothers, those with active tumours or cancer must contact their medical practitioner before using this essential oil.

Chamomile is a relaxant:-

place a few drops on your pillow or on a handkerchief under your pillow to help you to relax and have a good nights sleep.

Lemon gives a feeling of being uplifted, helps you to relax and feel calmer:-

add a few drops to a vaporizer to help you relax and feel calmer.

Mandarin* helps you feel more joyful and calmer:-

add a few drops to a vaporizer, sit back and relax

Peppermint* helps to clear your mind:-

add a few drops to a carrier oil and get someone to massage the stress away;

can also be infused and drunk as a tea.

*Clary Sage, Mandarin and Peppermint oils MUST not be used by pregnant women as they could cause blood thinning and premature labor.

*Warnings*

*Aromatherapy products are never to be used in place of medical treatment.

*Essential oils are potent, so they always need to be used in safe quantities.

*Using more than the recommended dose can be as dangerous as overdosing on medicines.

*If you are pregnant, epileptic, suffering from high blood pressure or already taking medication consult your medical practitioner or a qualified aromatherapist

Aromatherapy for Depression

Aromatherapy Scent is the most enduring of our senses. Aromatherapy is the use of pure essential and absolute oils. Essential oils are complex, highly fragrant and volatile substances, with varying degrees of complexity, fragrance, and volatility. They are the most potent and concentrated extracts of various parts of flowers, fruits, leaves, spices, roots, and woods. The plant's essence molecules are approximately 75-100 times more concentrated as an essential oil than in the dried plant. It is a holistic treatment of caring for the body with pleasant smelling botanical oils such as rose, lemon, lavender and peppermint. It has the power to transform our emotions, and heal our bodies.

Aromatherapy is one of the fastest growing fields in alternative medicine. It is widely used at home, clinics and hospitals for a variety of applications such as pain relief for women in labor pain, relieving pain caused by the side effects of the chemotherapy undergone by the cancer patients, and rehabilitation of cardiac patients. The oils are obtained by steam distillation, expression (squeezing the oil from peel), maceration (immersing the plant in hot oil to release the essence) or enfleurage (pressing flowers between oiled glass plates). The essential oils are aromatic essences extracted from plants, flowers, trees, fruits, bark, grasses and seeds with distinctive therapeutic, psychological, and physiological properties, which improve and prevent illness.

There are about 150 essential oils. These oils are extracted by the means of steam distillation, cold expression, or fixed oil or alcohol extraction. Most of these oils have antiseptic properties; some are antiviral, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, antidepressant and expectorant. When you take "Aromatherapy massage" with the essential oils, these oils are absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin. Other properties of the essential oils which are taken advantage of in aromatherapy are their stimulation, relaxation, digestion improvement, and diuretic properties. To get the maximum benefit from essential oils, it should be made from natural, pure raw materials. Synthetically made oils do not work. They may also be added to steam inhalations or baths, added to compresses or spread throughout a room with diffusers. The essential oils used in aromatherapy are the life force of the plants from which they have been extracted. These oils can be massaged on your body, inhaled, added to your bath or sprayed in the air. Cold expression is used for citrus oils, and a method of solvent extraction for absolutes, concretes and resinoids. The newest technological process of extraction is the hypercritical carbon dioxide method: in part due to high cost, it is not as commonly available.

Aromatherapy uses aromatic essences that are extracted from plants. Aromatherapy is particularly effective in dealing with stress, depression and stress related disorders. 'Depression' is a term which encompasses a wide spectrum of psychic problems ans symtoms which, in turn, can lead to more serious illnesses. Aromatherapy, in helping to relax the patient and by reducing stress, may actually help to prevent such conditions. Depression related disorders, such as digestive problems, stress and other mental problems, can be treated by Aromatherapy. As depression is reduced, there is a corresponding improvement in sleep patterns and energy levels. In aromatherapy it is believed that the sense of smell is very powerful and directly connected to our brain, and therefore, to the hormonal activity in the body. Based on this logic, we can balance our hormones using essential oils. Many of the essential oils used for depression are from flowers and fruit. These essences have an uplifting effect on the mind and emotions. An aromatic bath two to three times per week is especially helpful for depression. Sometimes the aromatic baths are effective enough on their own as a remedy for mild bouts of depression or feeling blue.

Sandalwood is an essential oil used in yoga and in temples in many religions. It is indicated to treat anxiety, nervousness, and depression. Aromatherapy can help you relax, be energized, and create a feeling of well being. Aromatherapy is an alternative theatment that uses the highly concentrated essential oils that are extracted from plants to treat symptoms and assist in the healing process. Aromatherapy is aimed at revitalizing the body and mind while lifting your spirits. Aromatherapy will aid in promoting a sense of well being. Aromatherapy is also known for easing mental fatigue and insomnia. When you use these wonderful essential oils in the correct blend for massages, baths, diffusers and even personal perfumes you will begin to benefit from the use of aromatherapy. Using aromatherapy for depression will give you the peace of mind and the well being that you need. Bergamot (pressed from the peels of bitter oranges) has a strong reputation for its ability to uplift the mind and emotions. Bergamot has the ability to both relax the nerves and invigorate the spirit; with these actions, this important oil can be helpful for a variety of depressive condtions. Sweet orange, a close relative, works in a similar fashion, with a slightly sweeter aroma.

A Brief Guide To Aromatherapy

The form of treatment known as Aromatherapy is both a science and an art. It involves the use of natural plants to promote good health. It is administered to benefit people, both physically and psychologically, but you don't need to be ill to take advantage of its potential. Because it is restorative, as well as curative, it is widely used for relaxation and pleasure.

Essential Oils

Aromatherapy is concerned with the use of essential oils to assist in keeping us healthy in mind and body. The essential oils are extracted from plants including flowers, leaves, fruits, barks, roots, and stalks. People are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of a natural health lifestyle, and what could be more natural than obtaining a dose of nature itself, through the use of aromatherapy? Used as part of a regular routine, it can help you to avoid becoming ill in the first place, and to be relaxed but alert.

Different essential oils have different effects, and they vary in their potency. Depending on the plants from which they were extracted they may be anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, antibiotic, or anti-viral, or a combination of any of these. Essential oils may be used as tonics or sedatives, to promote relaxation or enhance a particular state of mind in a drug free way.

It cannot be overstated that the essential oils used in aromatherapy are one of the most natural ways to facilitate good health. Various hazards are caused by pollutants in the air, due to our industrialized society. There are all sorts of obnoxious contaminants creating bad smells that may be thought of as the complete opposite of essential oils and aromatherapy. Unfortunately synthetic air fresheners may do little more than mask the airborne invaders. It is good to know that there is an established science, in aromatherapy, that can more adequately assist with the threat. There is nothing to compare with the scents of nature, but not everybody knows that they can be made conveniently available through the essential oils of aromatherapy.

Extracting the Oil from the Plants

There are various ways that essential oils are extracted from plants, including distillation, pressing, solvent extraction and effleurage. For those who are interested there are many sources that explain the processes in detail, and a trip to your local library, or an online search could be beneficial.

How Does Aromatherapy Work?

Various essential oils have different uses. If you have ever walked through a pine forest you will know that the aroma from the trees is very refreshing. If it was a holiday experience you might consider how marvelous it would be, if you could bottle that wondrous smell and take it home! You can do just that because that is what aromatherapy is partly about. Bottling nature so you can take it home, add a few drops to your bath water, sit back and create a holiday experience in the privacy of your own home. Using aromatherapy in this way is doubly effective as you derive benefit from inhalation, and through the skin.

It is reassuring to know that aromatherapy has been the subject of a great deal of research, and is firmly established as a form of complementary medicine, and is gaining increasing recognition in conventional medical practice. Formal training is widely available, to degree and diploma level, for those who wish to take up the subject as a career. Therefore, there will always be dedicated professionals available, to administer to the needs of all who have discovered the wonderful benefits of this most natural of treatments.
